Jenny Ahn

Hometown: Covina
Professional Aspirations: Politics/Teaching

 

Jenny is considering becoming a social worker, teacher, or politician. Jenny is concerned with habitat destruction and the excessive production of waste products. She greatly enjoys reading everything from classic novels to interesting non-fiction. She is also an accomplished tennis player. Jenny has volunteered at the public library, a home for disabled children, a language school for children, a day care center, and her city's center for Parks and Recreation.


Gedioen Aloula

Professional Aspirations:
Medicine/Environmental Science

 

Gedioen is considering a profession in medicine, social science, environmental science, and biology. The destruction of the rainforest and global warming both concern him. Gedioen enjoys basketball, football, and playing the guitar or the keyboard. He has volunteered at Kaiser hospital. Gedioen greatly enjoys participating in choir and a public service academy, and playing with his little brother and sister.


Thea Carlson
Hometown: Santa Cruz
Professional Aspirations:
Environmental Science/Medicine

 

Thea has considered a variety of professions, ranging from pediatric medicine to environmental science. Thea's environmental concerns include agricultural pesticide use and nuclear waste disposal. She calls herself a "fanatic recycler". Thea enjoys going for a walk and sitting in nature. She also enjoys dancing, particularly the Samba. Thea was the principal cellist for the Santa Cruz Youth Orchestra and is currently performing with the U.C. Santa Cruz Orchestra.


Jackie Chang
Hometown: San Jose
Professional Aspirations: Chemistry/Art

 

Jackie has considered professions ranging from chemist to graphic artist. She is concerned with both effective waste management and the reduction of air pollution. In order to help improve public policy, Jackie has worked as a volunteer intern at Cupertino City Hall and has provided leadership to her local Interact Club. She greatly enjoys reading, writing, and working on her acclaimed artwork. Her hobbies include playing the piano and collecting stamps.


Claudia Dominguez
Hometown: San Jose
Professional Aspirations: Surgeon

 

Claudia would like to become either a surgeon or a professor of philosophy or literature. Her environmental concerns include overpopulation and the profusion of landfills. Claudia's hobbies include reading and playing the the guitar or the viola. She has volunteered for the Red Cross, as well as other community based organizations. Claudia rejuvenates her spirit by listening to music and painting.


Onjefu Efada
Hometown: Bakersfield
Professional Aspirations: Physical Therapy

 

Onjefu would like to become a physical therapist, on the way to eventually conducting medical research. Onjefu is concerned with the pollution of groundwater and the depletion of the habitat of the kit fox. He rejuvenates his spirit by jogging, playing basketball, singing, and laughing. Onjefu's interests include working with conflict mediation, and student tutoring.


Brandi Ford
Hometown: Irvine
Professional Aspirations: Biologist/Pediatrician

 

Brandi is concerned with the pollution of the ocean and the devastation of ocean mammal populations. To rejuvenate her spirit, Brandi walks with her two dogs or climbs a tree. She enjoys playing volleyball and tree planting. Brandi has spent a number of years volunteering at the Career Resource Office and Family Service Center of the U.S. Marine Corps.


Winson Hoang
Hometown: Cupertino
Professional Aspirations: Business

 

Winson's career goals focus on business and management, particularly sales and marketing. Winson is concerned by both deforestation and pollution. For two years, he has been Fundraising Chair for the Future Business Leaders of America. He has also volunteered as a peer tutor. Winson greatly enjoys camping, running, and hiking. He also participates in Football and Track & Field.


Ilisten Jones
Hometown: Inglewood
Professional Aspirations: Medicine
Ilisten is aiming toward medical school and a career as a doctor. Ilisten wants to help stop the pollution of the oceans, specifically focusing on the widespread damage caused by oil spills. She is also deeply concerned about the apathy among the youth in her community. Ilisten enjoys writing poetry and tutoring. She plays the clarinet and is on the Varsity team in Tennis. She rejuvenates her spirit by doing something fun, "like going to an amusement park."

Elizabeth Kwo
Hometown: San Francisco
School: Lowell High School
Professional Aspirations: Veterinarian/Physician

 

She loves animals, and would like to become either a veterinarian or a physician. Air pollution and water pollution both concern her. Elizabeth enjoys playing with animals and participating in student government and drama. She rejuvenates her spirit by singing and playing the flute or the piano. For three years, Elizabeth provided leadership to her community's volunteers club. Today, she continues to focus her energy on volunteering.


Lily Lam

Hometown: Oakland
Professional Aspirations: Engineering

 

Lily is interested in working in both conservation and engineering. Overpopulation and soil erosion both concern her. She has participated in the Multi-intergenerational Leadership Training Program and the Conservation Career Development Program. Her hobbies include participating in the German Club, working as an editor for her school newspaper, and singing.


Gustavo Miguel
Hometown: Van Nuys
Professional Aspirations: Pediatrician

 

Gustavo would like to work in the medical field, probably as a pediatrician. His environmental concerns include air pollution and water pollution. Gustavo has pursued an interest in journalism, working as an advertising editor. He greatly enjoys music, basketball, and baseball. Gustavo has participated in his school's spirit club and the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine.


Jason Morgan
Hometown: Moreno Valley
Professional Aspirations: Business

 

Jason wants to major in business, in order to eventually become an accountant. He is concerned with the depletion of the ozone layer and with global warming. Jason greatly enjoys acting, directing, and writing. He also loves baseball and beautiful smiles. Jason has provided leadership for the Distributive Clubs of America, as well as other youth groups in his area.


Dung Kim Nguyen
Hometown: Oakland
Professional Aspirations: Medicine

 

Kim plans to work in medicine. Her environmental concerns include air pollution and the lack of recycling. She greatly enjoys participating in ROTC, the Willa Brown Aviation Club, and college bowl. For two years, she was the President of the Junior Statesman of America. Kim also enjoys playing badminton and volleyball.


Jose Resendiz
Hometown: Perris
Professional Aspirations: Surgeon

 

Jose plans to become either a surgeon or a general practitioner. The prevention of pollution and the beautification of communities both interest him. Jose participates in Track & Field and Cross-Country. He is most happy when he sees his three-year-old sister happy. In order to gain experience and to serve his community, Jose worked as a television technician at the Moreno Valley City Hall.


Santiago Rizzo
Hometown: Berkeley
School: Berkeley High School
Professional Aspirations: Political Science

 

Santiago would like to be either a lawyer or a politician. Global warming and environmental justice both concern him. Santiago enjoys baseball, soccer, acting, wrestling, and rock climbing. He was the board director of the Downtown Berkeley Business Association, and the student representative to the Diversity Project. Santiago is happiest while spending time with his thirteen-year-old brother. After SYESP, Santiago went to Argentina and became an exchange student for a year.


Cristina Sanchez
Hometown: Chula Vista
Professional Aspirations: Surgeon

 

Cristina would like to major in business management or international commerce, in order to eventually open her own restaurant. Cristina is concerned with the pollution of beaches and habitat destruction, particularly as a result of the expansion of a convention center in San Diego. She greatly enjoys swimming, reading, cooking, and studying European and American history. Cristina provided leadership for her local Interact Club, and acted as the Regent of Finance for her high school.


Kristina Tom
Hometown: San Francisco
School: Saint Ignatius High School
Professional Aspirations: Singer/Astronaut

 

Kristina ambitions have included being a policewomen, a Safeway grocery bagger, a singer, and an astronaut. Currently, she is considering psychology, law, and poetry. Kristina is concerned with the contamination of freshwater and deforestation. She greatly enjoys writing short stories and poetry, singing, and participating in speech and debate. She has written for her school magazine, played piano with the jazz band, and worked in a local soup kitchen. Kristina worked for SYESP as a counselor in 1999.


Guillermo Vargas

Hometown: Anaheim
Professional Aspirations: Product Design

 

Although Guillermo wants to enter college with an open mind as to his future profession, he does have a growing interest in product design. He wants to help conserve nature, by specifically focusing on combating air pollution. Guillermo loves to run, participating in both Cross-Country and Track & Field. He has provided leadership for the United Culture Club and his school newspaper. Guillermo has volunteered at the Western Medical Center. He enjoys a variety of music, including Salsa, Peruvian Inca flute melodies, and anything by Lauryn Hill.


Lisa Vargas
Hometown: Antioch
Professional Aspirations: Medicine

 

Lisa would like to become a physician, working either in pediatrics or geriatrics. Lisa's environmental concerns include Selenium pollution and the loss of rainforests. She has provided leadership to her high school science club and the concert choir. Lisa rejuvenates her spirit by playing with her brother Raymond. Her hobbies include coordinating student dances and participating in drama. Lisa became an SYESP participant again in 1999.
